…with the precious dew from heaven above

(Deuteronomy 33:13, BSB)

Always learning new things…

I’ve been reading the Bible every day for about 15 years now. I’ve read it through from front to back several times, and our family has read it out loud together all the way through. When I read the Bible, I don’t pick certain favorite verses, I just choose a book and read it all, because I know that every single word in it is from God, and that is just wonderful to me. It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s Numbers or Ephesians, Leviticus or Malachi, every book is rich with God’s wisdom to help me follow His ways every day.

But I don’t say all of this in order to congratulate myself – quite the contrary, I say all of this because with as much time as I have spent in God’s word, I am constantly amazed at the obvious details that still manage to escape my notice and cause me to always be learning something brand new!

As many times as I have read the Bible, as many times as I have read the book of Deuteronomy, I somehow never noticed that morning dew is literally a “precious thing of heaven,” as the King James states it. I knew that frost was given by the breath of  God (Job 37:10), that He sends the winds where He will (Psalm 135:7), that He sets the waves in their boundaries (Job 38:11), but I somehow missed the truth about dew. It is, literally, “dew of heaven from above” (Genesis 27:39). It is such a precious and beautiful gift that it is a blessing to dwell with it…

Concerning Joseph he said: “May his land be blessed by the Lord with the precious dew from heaven above…”

(Deuteronomy 33:13, BSB)

…and a curse to dwell away from it…

His father Isaac answered him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from the richness of the land, away from the dew of heaven above.

(Genesis 27:39, BSB)

Morning dew is undeniably lovely, and I have spent many a joyful moment taking photographs of dewdrops clinging to leaves and branches and blossoms, standing in awe at their transformative beauty…An asparagus fern in the bright sun is pretty – but in the silvery morning dew, it is breath-taking. A spiderweb in the daylight is interesting – but draped with morning dew, it is delightful. A honeybee is always cute – but after a brush with dewy wildflowers, she is stunning!

And the moment is so fleeting, because the dew vanishes with the rising sun, and all things return to normal…And all the while, I never recognized that morning dew is so refreshing, so delightful, so absolutely transforming, because it is a droplet of heaven lent to us on earth below!

May God give to you the dew of heaven

(Genesis 27:28, BSB)
