Many jobs…One calling!
The world follows a career path…And when you come to Christ, you can stay in your career…but recognize that you’re on a whole new path!
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” “Do not take money by force or false accusation,” he said. “Be content with your wages.”(Luke 3:12-14, BSB)
John the Baptist didn’t tell the tax collectors to stop being tax collectors. He didn’t tell the soldiers to stop being soldiers. He told them, in the job that they were in, to live and work with integrity and kindness and humility. They were working in jobs that were in-the-world – but they could work at those jobs in a way that was not-of-the-world. And the same is true for us!
Whatever job we may have…in Christ, we have a new Boss. Whatever career path we were following…in Christ, we have a new Way. Whatever goals we were pursuing…in Christ, we have a new Command.
And whatsoever ye do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.(Colossians 3:17, KJV)
Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving…(Colossians 3:23-24, BSB)
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.(Matthew 22:37-39, KJV)
It won’t always be easy, to do all things for the glory of God, in the face of temptation or frustration or obstacles or opposition. But this, of course, is where our real work begins!
