Not Forgotten

The faithful may be ignored by men…but they are never forgotten by God!

They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.

(Jeremiah 32:33, NIV)

The story of Jeremiah the prophet touches my heart every time I read it. He was a faithful man of God, hated by his countrymen for speaking the truth when they didn’t want to hear it. I mean really-really-really didn’t want to hear it. Like put Jeremiah in prison, threw him down a well, wished he were dead didn’t want to hear it. Even his own childhood friends and family, in his own hometown. His story is well-known and recorded in detail in the Bible…But it struck me that there are many, many faithful believers who have experienced similar rejection, but whose names have been forgotten by men……

There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them.

(Hebrews 11:35-38, BSB)

All his days, Jeremiah spoke God’s truth ~ and was despised for it. The world was not worthy of him.

And there were others ~ many, many unnamed, faithful believers, across all of time, who have brought the Lord’s word to a people that didn’t want to hear it.

Strange encouragement ~ but encouragement nonetheless…

Because, though in this life the believers may be despised for sharing God’s word, and even entirely forgotten by the records of men, yet every single one will always be seen by God, counted faithful, and enter into eternal life!

For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name…

(Hebrews 6:10, BSB)
