Out of the mouths of children!
“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked. “Yes,” Jesus answered, “have you never read: ‘From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise’?”(Matthew 21:16, BSB)
Our son, Spencer, age 10, is working on a project for an upcoming craft fair. He’s making Rubberband Board Games, which are essentially wooden peg-boards that let you create all kinds of geometric designs using rubberbands.
He worked out the design himself, and then he had to work out a process to make a batch of them, in varying sizes. So he created a template, certainly an invaluable tool in the woodworker’s toolkit. He carefully used his template to lay out a batch of boards. And then he reviewed them with my husband.
But one of the boards didn’t look quite right. One of the boards had holes too close to the edges. What happened?
Well, it turned out that Spencer had made a mistake squaring up his board – so his template was square, but his board was a bit off. Joe spent some time refreshing him on the process of squaring for next time.
A good lesson, and a simple fix. Joe helped Spencer realign his template, for this board, to fit within the borders, and Spencer laid out all of his holes again. And now, he had two sets of holes, on one board: one set of old, inaccurate template-marks; one set of new, accurate template-marks…And then he said, “Now I just have to make sure I follow the right one!”
And oh, my, goodness, isn’t that just the truth? We talked about how this simple statement reflects a profound truth that is foundational to our lives, all of the time. Because it doesn’t do any good to carefully follow the template if it’s the wrong template!
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.(Proverbs 14:12, KJV)
Eternal spiritual lessons, always right there in everyday life in the workshop with your kids!
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.(Acts 4:12, KJV)
